Nonlinear PDE’s Summer School success!

Professor Elaine Crooks and Professor Vitaly Moroz, Department of Mathematics, together with Professor Federica Dragoni (Cardiff University), organised the successful Swansea Summer School in Nonlinear PDEs, held in Swansea from July 1-5, 2024. The event was funded through a combination of grants from the EPSRC and the London Mathematical Society. The Summer School attracted 10 invited lecturers and 43 participants from the UK and 13 other countries. As part of the EPSRC Network on Generalised and Low-Regularity Solutions for Nonlinear PDEs, the School aimed to enhance the training of early career researchers through mini-courses and guest lectures on the latest advances in the field of nonlinear PDEs.

Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge

European Circular Economy Hotspot Event

Professor Gavin Bunting, Department of Civil Engineering, was invited by the chair, Jane Davidson, former Welsh Government minister, to be a member of the Challenge Group in December 2022 as the circular economy expert and to also co-chair the food group.

The aim of the food group was to demonstrate how the food system is critical in addressing climate change and ensuring the wellbeing of Wales.

The Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group has explored ways to accelerate the delivery of Wales’s climate change commitments, in a manner that addresses the many related challenges facing Wales, from food and energy security to rural livelihoods and economic opportunity for all.

The Group was commissioned by the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru to provide pathways to net zero by 2035.

Professor Gavin Bunting has been working with the Welsh Government and WRAP in the planning of the Hotspot which will be running two panel sessions, showcasing the work of Welsh academia in the area of circular economy.

The European Circular Economy Hotspot is an annual event, which has grown from a gathering first held in the Netherlands in 2016.It is held in a different location every year, with each host region chosen for demonstrating international best practice and innovation in the development of a circular economy.

This year the event will take place in Cardiff and will welcome all sectors across industry, including business, public sector, academia, and third sector and communities.

Grant success for “Clot-Busting’ project

A collaboration between Medicine, Engineering and the NHS has resulted in a successful bid for an EPSRC standard research grant for the project "Clot Busting: Advanced rheometry for informing the development of future thrombolytic therapies". The overall project value is £1.14M (fEC) including a cash contribution of £468k, split between FMHLS and FSE.

The collaboration involved Professor Karl Hawkins from Medicine and Engineering Co-Leads Dr Dan Curtis and Dr Francesco Del Giudice (both at the Complex Fluids Research group), Professor Owen Guy (Chemistry) and Suresh Pillai, a clinical Senior Lecturer at the Medical School who is the representative for the NHS.

This award builds upon our expertise and successful track record in blood rheology research at Swansea - attributes that were recognised during the peer review process.
