Prestigious international fellowship awarded to Swansea academic
Congratulations to Professor Perumal Nithiarasu, Department of Civil Engineering, who is one of only 22 scientists to have been awarded the prestigious Vaibhav fellowship, 2023.
A total of 302 proposals were submitted, and the recipients were chosen on the merits of their project objectives. Professor Nithiarasu’s proposal falls within the Health, Medical Sciences and Biomedical Devices area of research.
The fellowship, which was introduced by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, aims to facilitate academic and research collaborations between Indian Institutions and the best institutions in the world through mobility of faculty/researcher from overseas institutions to India. IIT Kanpur is the fellowship host and is one of Swansea University’s strategic research partners.

Swansea-Kyoto University partnership renewal success!
The Faculty of Science and Engineering are thrilled to announce the renewal of Swansea University's partnership with Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute! Our collaboration, spanning back to 2008, has evolved into ground-breaking research on coastal change, climate impacts, and nature-based coastal management.
In 2017, an MoU was signed, paving the way for institutional-level collaboration. Under the leadership of Professor Harshinie Karunarathna, Department of Civil Engineering, our ties with Professor’s Hajime Mase and Nobuhito Mori have flourished, resulting in extensive work on high-resolution global wave modelling, beach morphodynamics, and climate change impacts on the coast.
This renewed MoU in 2023 signifies continued support from Kyoto University. They've generously shared datasets, offered expertise in wave modelling, supported PhD students, and facilitated staff visits.
The collaboration has yielded joint publications in high-impact journals, collaborative workshops on coastal hydro-morphodynamics, and invited presentations.
Professor Nobuhito Mori has been an Honorary Professor of FSE, Swansea University since 2020, and a collaborative research grant was awarded in 2023 for 'Developing an assessment method for coastal disaster risk reduction by nature-based coastal management'.
