Solar panels in space Dan Lamb, Research Lead MOCVD Centre, CISM, has recently contributed to an article in UK Tech News on the viability to produce low-cost, lightweight solar panels that can generate energy in space.
The research, in collaboration with the University of Surrey, studied data from a satellite over a six-year period, observing how the panels generated power and weathered solar radiation over 30,000 orbits. The results showed that the panels resisted radiation and their thin-film structure had not deteriorated in the harsh thermal and vacuum conditions of space.
The study and findings have also been published in the Journal Acta Astronautica. |
