STAFF NEWS

Mathematics Conference success!

The Conference on Motivic and Equivariant Topology, organised by Professor Grigory Garkusha and Peter Bonart, took place in Mathematics Department from 15th to 17th of May. It brought together mathematicians across diverse disciplines in topology, motivic homotopy theory and arithmetic geometry.

The conference addressed current theoretical problems and developments in these areas. It hosted both world leading experts in the field and early career mathematicians from the UK and Europe.

Hardware security research cited in Government Policy Paper

Professor Siraj Shaikh’s Discribe report on advances in hardware security has been cited in the National semiconductor strategy policy paper prepared by the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology for Parliament.

The findings have also been published in the Journal of Cybersecurity which is a credible journal for upcoming REF (Research Excellence Framework) submissions, and was a collaboration with AESIN (Automotive Electronic Systems Innovation Network)and SEMI (Semiconductors Equipment and Material International).

Dr Mahaboob Basha attends historic ceremony

Dr Mahaboob Basha from the Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) attended the King Charles' Coronation in Westminster on May 6.

Mahaboob, who works as ESRI's external relations and engagement manager, represented the diverse South Wales community at the historic ceremony.

In addition to his role at the university, Dr Basha serves as the communication and compliance lead for the new Sketty Mosque Community Centre on Sketty Park Road in Swansea.

New appointment to the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s fellowship policy committee

Dr Roderick Thomas from Swansea University’s Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences has been appointed to the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s fellowship policy committee for a period running to September 2026.

The Fellowship Policy Committee role will include contributing to the development of policy and related debates, the approval process for new volunteers, and acting as Chair of relevant Fellow Assessment panels. It was awarded based on Dr Thomas’ extensive experience, interest and understanding of the IET.

Biosciences student selected as a National Geographic Young Explorer

The National Geographic Society has just revealed its 15 Young Explorers for 2023, and we extend our congratulations to MSc student Betty Jahateh for being chosen as one of them.

Betty, who is an environmental biologist, ocean youth leader, and consultant, has been recognized for her scientific innovation and conservation endeavors, particularly her groundbreaking research on saltwater intrusion in The Gambia.

The Young Explorers program carefully selects individuals based on their remarkable bravery, leadership qualities, and solutions that drive positive change. This year's cohort, hailing from 13 different countries, reflects a diverse and dynamic group of explorers.

Physics students visit CERN

During easter break PhysSoc organised a visit for 44 physics students to the European Centre for Nuclear Physics (CERN) near Geneva, Switzerland, the worlds largest physics laboratory. They spent two days at CERN, where they were welcomed by Swansea alumni Rhodri Jones, who is head of the beams department at CERN, and subsequently visited the ALICE experiment and the CERN control centre. On the second day they were welcomed by the Swansea physics department team at CERN who work on the ALPHA Antihydrogen experiment at CERNs Antimatter facility. The trip was in part sponsored by the physics department.

Tropical Marine Biology students journey to the Red Sea

Students from the Biosciences Department recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Egyptian Red Sea as part of the Tropical Marine Biology module.

During this incredible trip, students actively participated in a monthly turtle survey, lending their assistance to the Red Sea Project which is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.

PhD viva success

Congratulations to Darren Scott, Computer Science, who recently passed his PhD viva. His research topic ‘Rethinking sustained healthy lifestyle change through design and evaluation of socio technical wearable systems’ was supervised by Dr Matt Roach.
