Cansense wins St David's Award
Congratulations to Professor Peter Dunstan, from the Department of Physics and Dr Cerys Jenkins, both Co-founders and Directors of Cansense, who have won the Innovation, Science and Technology category in the St David’s Awards for their work in advancing bowel cancer diagnostics.
The awards celebrate the amazing human spirit and endeavours of individuals and organisations making a difference here in Wales.
Antarctic video for schools wins prestigious award
Congratulations to glaciologist Professor Adrian Luckman, Department of Geography, who is part of a team that have been awarded the prestigious Silver Publishers Award from the Geographical Association for their video. The film - 'Antarctica, ice melt & global sea level rise', was developed by Time for Geography and includes time lapse clips of ice flow gathered by Adrian who is an expert in satellite imaging. The film will engage and inspire millions of students each year by bringing geographical education into the classroom.
Professor Hywel Thomas, President of the Learned Society of Wales said: “I am delighted to welcome our new Fellows to the Society and look forward to their active involvement with us in the years ahead.”
Two journal articles of Professor Vitaly Moroz, Department of Mathematics, together with his co-author Jean Van Schaftingen, Université Catholique de Louvain, have been ranked in the top three most cited journal maths papers in the years 2013 and 2017 respectively, according to the database MathSciNet. Congratulations!
Japanese Knotweed research findings published in The Conversation
Dr Sophie Hocking, Department of Biosciences, has recently had a paper published in The Conversation. The article describes the impact of knotweed on biodiversity and on home and landowners and the need to explore sustainable methods to control it using alternatives to herbicides which effect human health and the environment.
Students win prizes at IMechE Regional Final competition
Invent for the Panet winners
Engineering MSc and EngD students recently presented their innovative industry-led research to an audience of academics and industrialists at the M2A annual conference. There was a diverse range of talks demonstrating innovation and technology transfer driving the economy regionally and internationally.
A group of first-year Mechanical Engineering students recently won two awards in the IMechE Regional Final Competition at Bournemouth University, which was a fantastic success given that this was the first time Swansea University students had competed. They wonBest Presentation and third placeoverall. The students were Joe Fuller, Toby Wood, Ben Rudge, Ben Mansfield and Michael Davies.
Congratulation to Team H2Grow students Alex Henson, Oli Leslie-Golding, Rachel Simms and Matthew Coomes who have won the Invent for the Planet competition.
Run by Texas A&M University, the competition was open to 21 participating universities in 15 countries around the world. Swansea was the only UK university invited to participate.
The team which was made up of students from engineering and physics created a pump that can make polluted river water safe to drink.
Congratulations to Hanchi Ren, Department of Computer Science, who recently passed his PhD viva. Hanchi’s thesis was titled 'Gradient Leakage and Protection for Federated Learning', and the examiners were Bernie Tiddeman (Aberystwyth University) and Yang Long (Durham University).
