PhD student contributes to significant research output

Wave research published in journal

PhD student Declan Hughes and his supervisor Dr Wing Chung Tsoi, Materials Science and Engineering, recently had a paper published in the Science journal. Declan and Wing have been collaborating with teams from China and Germany to achieve highly efficient p-i-n perovskite solar cells with high light stability and particularly high tolerance to temperature variations. 

PhD student Xin Wang and his supervisors Professor Dominic Reeve and Professor Harshinie Karunarathna, Civil ngineering, with international collaborator Dr Min Luo (Zhejiang University) have recently published a paper in the Journal of Computational Physics entitled 'An enhanced momentum conservation treatment for FDM simulation of two-phase flows with large density ratio' as part of research into waves breaking on coastal structures.

Grant success for alzheimer's research

Dr Sanjiv Sharma, Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a prestigious MRC (Medical Research Council) and AMED (Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development) grant under the Japan UK research collaboration in neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases and dementia initiative. This grant proposal titled "Multi-analyte prognostic and diagnostic screening in blood and skin for Alzheimer's disease" is led by Swansea (PI). The grant will be used to develop a ‘smart patch’ that can detect biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease and aid in early diagnosis.  

The £1.3M grant consortium involves Imperial College London, University of Glasgow and partners from Japan, Tokyo University and QST, Japan.

Grant success for liver cancer research

Dr Hadi Madinei, Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded a €237k Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship for his research proposal: ‘Design and Fabrication of a Novel Biomass Sensor’. 

Working with Dr Saber Azizi, the project aims to develop a novel ultra-sensitive MEMS mass sensor capable of measuring masses in the order of femtogram. The proposed device will be tested for the detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), which is a biomarker for liver cancer. 

The Fellowship supports the creative and innovative potential of postdoctoral researchers wishing to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility. 

Cansense shortlisted for St David's Award

Professor Peter Dunstan, from the Department of Physics and Dr Cerys Jenkins, both Co-founders and Directors of Cansense, have been shortlisted for the Innovation, Science and Technology category in the St David’s Awards for their work in advancing bowel cancer diagnostics.Winners will be announced in April.

Geography Research Officer wins President's Award

Congratulations to Dr Hannah Buckland, a post-doctoral researcher in Geography, who has won a President’s Award from the Geological Society of London. The award is conferred upon early career geoscientists who show significant early promise and are judged to have potential to be future leaders in their field.

Emrys Evans featured in BBC Cymru article

Dr Emrys Evans, Chemistry, recently participated in a Welsh-language BBC Cymru article on: ‘Welsh innovators in the science world’ and in a radio interview (19th September) on his scientific career and research in semiconductors, and CISM (Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials). 

New editor appointment

Professor Luca Borger, Biosciences, has become the new Editor for the Ecological Reviews book series of the British Ecological Society. The series consists of edited, multi-author volumes, and the aim is to provide a forum for current topics likely of long-term importance to the progress of the field. The series is intended to be a source of ideas and inspiration for ecologists at all levels – from graduate students to more established researchers and professionals.
