UK Engineering Apprentice of the year!
McNamee student essay prize winner
Geography MSc thesis publication
Congratulations to BEng Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Graduate Victoria Searle who has won the National Winner of the Make UK Engineering Apprentice: Final Year Award!
Victoria is currently working for Airbus within the Wing Structures team of Plant Industrial Architecture.
The Degree Apprenticeship programme is run in collaboration with Coleg Cambria.
Gordon Birse, PhD student in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, beat competition from around the world to win the McNamee British Philosophy of Sport Association Student Essay Prize 2022. His paper was entitled: "Did Suits Refute Wittgenstein on Game Definitions?: The Story of a Missed Encounter". Well done Gordon!
Geography MSc student Lewis Palmer recently had his dissertation published by JGR Biogeosciences. His thesis, ‘Spatio-Temporal Variations in Carbon Isotope Discrimination Predicted by the JULES Land Surface Model’ examines one of the widely used land-surface models as a reliable tool to predict future changes in both carbon and water cycles.
PhD student contributes to significant research output
PhD student conducts lifestyle study
PhD student Declan Hughes and his supervisor Dr Wing Chung Tsoi, Materials Science and Engineering, have recently had a paper published in the Science journal. Declan and Wing have been collaborating with teams from China and Germany to achieve highly efficient p-i-n perovskite solar cells with high light stability and particularly high tolerance to temperature variations.
PhD Sport and Exercise student Abbi Tan is currently looking for participants to join a study to assess lifestyle and metabolic health. The study is aimed at post-menopausal women over a period of 8 weeks to see if exercise alone or exercise with a Mediterranean diet can promote heart and metabolic health benefits via a hormone called ghrelin. Professor Siraj Shaikh wins major grant
Professor Siraj Shaikh and colleagues Dr Giedre Sabaliauskaite and Dr Hoang Nga Nguyen from the department of Computer Science, have been awarded a major joint industry and government project grant as part of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Connected and Automated Mobility programme.
The Sunderland Advanced Mobility Shuttle project in collaboration with the City of Sunderland Council has been awarded a total grant of £6 million to build and trial a self-driving shuttle service to the University of Sunderland and the Sunderland Royal Hospital, which will consist of 3 zero emission Aurrigo Auto-Shuttles.
Grant success for Dr Francisco Martin-Martinez
Dr Francisco Martin-Martinez, Chemistry, was recently awarded a collaborative 750K grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), together with MIT and Cornell University.
This research project is an innovative cross-sector and cross-disciplinary effort that aims to fundamentally rethink, re-shape, re-direct, and accelerate materials research and development towards more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable and resilient materials-based products and materials-driven outcomes.
Paper published in Global Challenges
Dr Wei Zhang, Chemical Engineering, has had a paper published in Global Challenges and the research was also featured on the cover. The paper, ’Reusing Waste Coffee Grounds as Electrode Materials: Recent Advances and Future Opportunities’ examines ways to upcycle waste coffee grounds-derived carbon into value-added electrode materials. This research could offer a more sustainable solution to global food waste issues and enable circular economies.
Professor Gert Aarts on Artificial Intelligence
Professor Gert Aarts, Physics, recently featured in a BBC Science Café programme on Artificial Intelligence.
