PRIZES AND AWARDS

Women in Engineering

Professor Serena Margadonna, Chemical Engineering, has been named one of the UK's Top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50) by the Women's Engineering Society (WES).

Serena is currently facilitating the commercialisation of next-generation sustainable rechargeable batteries for the electrification of transport.

"Innovation in engineering is fundamental in finding solutions to the global net-zero challenge, and these awards highlight the substantial impact women in engineering are making to achieve a more sustainable and fair society."

Her vision is to contribute toward a green economy by developing batteries that use abundant and widely available materials designed to be recycled.

Professor Cinzia Giannetti, Mechanical Engineering, has also been nominated as being in the 100 Highly Commended Finalists.

"Working in engineering, both research and teaching, is a rewarding career as it allows us to make positive changes to our society by developing innovative technologies and tools.”

The annual WE50 awards took place on International Women in Engineering Day, 23 June, which this year celebrates inventors and innovators who can #ImagineTheFuture.

The Equal Engineers Innovation Award

The MSc Sustainable Engineering Management for International Development course led by Dr Xiaojun (Ping) Yin, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, has been shortlisted for an Equal Engineers Innovation Award for 'Disruptive critical pedagogy to centre social justice in engineering education’.

The course examines the often unquestioned colonial and salvationist ideologies that unconsciously drive behaviour and decision making in humans and teaches students how to make more informed decisions in their engineering projects.

The award celebrates the diversity of the engineering and technology profession.

The winner will be announced on 15 September at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Tower Bridge, London

STUDENT SUCCESSES

Research students to present at the European Congress of Sports Sciences

Four postgraduate research students have been accepted to present orally at the European Congress of Sports Sciences (ECSS) in September 2022, Seville. This is a very impressive achievement as ECSS is one of the leading international conferences in Sports and Exercise Sciences, and a reflection of their high-quality research.

The students are:

Georgia Scott (Supervised by Dr Rowan Brown, Prof. Neil Bezodis, Dr Mark Waldron & Prof. Liam Kilduff)

Joe Page (Supervised by Dr Shane Heffernan, Dr Mark Waldron & Prof. Liam Kilduff)

Jenny Peel (Supervised by Dr Mark Waldron, Dr Shane Heffernan, Prof. Melitta McNarry & Prof. Liam Kilduff)

Erwan Izri (Supervised by Dr Rowan Brown, Prof. Neil Bezodis, Dr Mark Waldron & Prof. Liam Kilduff)

APPOINTMENTS

Academic to represent two NATO Research Task Groups

Congratulations to Dr Mark Waldron, Associate Professor, Sport and Exercise Sciences who was recently appointed as the U.K. academic representative for two NATO Research Task Groups (RTG). These multi-national groups will develop knowledge and research strategy for Defence and Security purposes across the next three years. The groups are:

NATO HUMAN FACTORS AND MEDICINE RTG 325 (Performance Nutrition for Fresh Feeding during Military Training and Operations)

NATO HUMAN FACTORS AND MEDICINE RTG 326 (Diet Supplementation in Military Personnel).

Academic appointed as Henriette Herz Scout

Congratulations to Dr Christian Klinke, Associate Professor, Chemistry and Professor at the Institute of Physics at the University of Rostock who has been appointed as Henriette Herz Scout by the Humboldt Foundation. Christian can now invite talented international female scientists to join his research group; each will receive a two-year fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is one of the most renowned scientific organizations and supports researchers from all over the world. The Henriette Herz program was introduced to provide even better support for young scientists.
